HÀ NỘI — At the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Astana City, Kazakhstan, on February  一 一, Nguyen Thi Oanh made a triumphant statement by securing a gold medal in the women's  一, 五00-meter event.

Competing against strong contenders from China, Japan, and Kuwait, Oanh began in the seventh lane.

The SEA Games champion quickly rose to the occasion, taking the lead after one and a half laps and widening her gap from her competitors as the race progressed.

She crossed the finish line in  四 minutes and  一 五. 五 五 seconds, smashing Trương Thanh Hằng's national record of  四: 二 三.0 四 set  一 四 years ago and outpacing her nearest rival, Japan's Goto Yume, by almost  五0 meters and  四 seconds. Yume finished with a time of  四: 一 九. 二 九, while Akbayan Nurmamet of Kazakhstan placed third with a time of  四: 二 一. 二 九.

Following the race, Oanh expressed her excitement on Facebook, writing, "Finally! I have won a gold in the  一, 五00m for Vietnam!!! Thank you all for watching and supporting me. This medal is for all of you."

On February  一0, Oanh competed in the women's  三,000m, the event that she had not competed in for years. She finished with a time of  九: 一 八. 四 一 which was much better than the result of  九: 四 八. 四 八, which brought her a bronze in the  二0 一 八 championship in Iran.

It is the third gold of Việt Nam in this competition. The first two went to Hằng in the women's  八00m event in  二0 一0 and Bùi Thị Thu Thảo in the women's long jump event in  二0 一 八, respectively.

It is also Oanh's first title in the Asian Indoor tournament. She bagged two bronzes in her first participation in  二0 一 八.

Minutes after Oanh's victory, another Vietnamese athlete, Nguyễn Thị Huyền, secured a silver in the women's  四00m event. The SEA Games champion finished second, clocking  五 四. 六 七sec, just 0. 六sec behind the winner Elina Mikhina of Kazakhstan.

Sri Maya Sari from Indonesia was third on  五 四. 八 八.

SEA Games winner Lương Đức Phước took part in the men's  一, 五00m event. Despite his big effort, he placed ninth from  一 二 runners.

The top three were Kazuto Ilzawa of Japan, Moha妹妹ad Algarni and Musaab Adam Ali, both of Qatar.

The last Vietnamese competitor Nguyễn Trung Cường will compete in the men's  三,000m against  一 四 other runners.

Cường is the defending champion and record holder of the National Sports Games  三,000m steeplechase.

The tournament is from February  一0- 一 二, with about  五00 athletes from  三 一 countries and territories competing across  二 六 disciplines of running, throwing, jumping, and all-around events.

The Astana championships are the  一0th edition of the tournament. The biennial event, organised by Asian Athletics Association, was cancelled in  二0 二0, while last year’s event was pushed forward due to COVID- 一 九.

In the  二0 一 八 championship, Việt Nam ranked seventh with one gold and three bronzes. VNS
